PPEN Call for action for June

Let's Put Pressure on Hudson!

Several important meetings are taking place in the next two weeks of June at which we need to question the role of Hudson Companies as a De Blasio favorite "affordable developer."

We want to be in the audience, hand out information and would like as many PPEN supporters as possible to attend, speak or hand out flyers. If you are planning to come to any of these meetings, please let us know by sending an email to ppeastnet@gmail.com

Wednesday, June18th: Brooklyn Rent Guidelines Board Meeting

From 5PM-8PM, the Brooklyn Rent Guidelines Board is meeting at Brooklyn Borough Hall, 209 Joralemon St. A representative of Hudson Companies, which is behind development at 626 Flatbush, has been appointed by De Blasio to this board.

Monday, June 23: Rent Guidelines Board Final Vote

At 6PM, in the Great Hall at Cooper Union (7 E 7th St, corner of 3rd Ave, in the basement), the final public meeting and final vote of the year for the Rent Guidelines Board will take place. We will have a flyering presence there.

Tuesday June 24th: Affordability Public Forum

At 7PM, St. Ann's Church is hosting a public forum, "Brooklyn Housing Matters: Tackling Affordability." Present on the panel will be a representative of Hudson Companies. We want to challenge Hudson's effort to present itself on the side of affordable housing despite its role in secondary displacement in our community.

Also on Tuesday the 24th: Community Board 9 Meeting

At 7PM, Community Board 9 will meet at Middle School 61 at 400 Empire Blvd. We will attend to ask why the Land Use Committee has decided to adjourn for the entire summer despite pressing development and zoning issues.

Again, we need as many people as possible to attend and/or participate in these events.  If you can, please do so and, if possible, drop a quick email to ppeastnet@gmail.com letting us know.

Thanks!

PPEN Rallies at City Hall for Temporary Moratorium on High Rise Construction

On Friday, June 6, we held a rally at City Hall calling for a temporary moratorium on high-rise construction along the east side of Prospect Park. Speakers at the rally included: City Council Member Mathieu Eugene; Community Board 9 member Diana Richardson; Desmond Romeo, president of the Flatbush Avenue Merchants Association; representatives of Brooklyn neighborhood organizations, and local residents. The rally was organized by the Prospect Park East Network and cosponsored by the Flatbush Tenants Coalition, Lefferts Manor Association, and the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association.

The first speaker at the rally was Leah Margulies, a plaintiff in the on-going lawsuit against Hudson Companies, which argues that the developer did not conduct the required impact studies. She addressed her remarks to Mayor de Blasio, saying, “Last week we got a temporary restraining order—but it is very short-lived. So, Mr. Mayor, we need you…to put your weight behind this limited moratorium and, at the same time, pressure David Kramer of Hudson to lower the height and add truly affordable apartments for low-income families.”
